“We just want to enjoy our lives”

Catherine, a resident of Detroit’s Hope Village for the past nine years, , describes her neighborhood as welcoming and peaceful, but increasingly disrupted by truck traffic. Trucks frequently travel along Oakland Boulevard and cut through residential streets like Woodrow Wilson, despite not being allowed.

She says the trucks are damaging roads, spreading dust, and affecting residents’ health. Due to increased dust and air pollution, she now relies on an inhaler to breathe more comfortably. The constant dirt enters homes, covering furniture and windows, making it difficult to keep living spaces clean or enjoy fresh air.

Truck noise and traffic also impact daily life, making it harder to relax or enjoy outdoor spaces. For seniors in her building, this is especially frustrating, as they want to spend time outside but are instead faced with dust, noise, and safety concerns.

What Real Change Looks Like To Her

She believes the city needs to take enforcement seriously, not just make promises. Stronger regulation of truck traffic, consistent follow-through, and real accountability are key. She wants city officials to recognize that residents, especially seniors, deserve clean, safe environments.

Ultimately, she is calling for action, not just discussion, so her community can live comfortably and enjoy their neighborhood without constant disruption.
